Cybersecurity Month 2025: Spotlight on Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence

Published by Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) on

In line with the celebration of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Foundation for Media Alternative is launching a four-week social media campaign to raise awareness on Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) and strengthen digital safety practices.

TFGBV refers to harmful acts carried out through technology, including online harassment, image-based abuse, impersonation, stalking, and doxxing, that disproportionately affect women, children, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. As internet use deepens across the Philippines, reports of TFGBV are rising, highlighting the urgent need for both digital literacy and survivor-centered responses.

The campaign, running from October 6 to 31, 2025, will feature a series of posts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on social media platforms. Each week will tackle a key theme:

      • Week 1 (Oct 6–10): Defining TFGBV and its impact

      • Week 2 (Oct 13–17): Safety & cybersecurity basics

      • Week 3 (Oct 20–24): Survivor support and resources

      • Week 4 (Oct 27–31): Advocacy & action for safer digital spaces

The initiative seeks not only to inform the public but also to empower communities to recognize, prevent, and respond to TFGBV. It will also provide practical tools for online safety, including how to set up two-factor authentication, spot signs of online stalking, and access hotlines such as the PNP Women and Children Cybercrime Protection Unit and the Commission on Human Rights – Center for Women and Gender Equality.

“Cybersecurity is more than technology. It is about dignity and safety. Women, LGBTIQ+, and gender-diverse communities deserve digital spaces that uphold equality, rights, and collective care,” said Christina Lopez, Program Officer.

As part of Cybersecurity Month 2025, this campaign amplifies the call for stronger digital rights protections in the Philippines and a future where technology is used to empower not endanger communities.
