Quezon City, Philippines — HROnline Philippines in partnership with the Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) organized the 4th Human Rights Pinduteros’ Choice Awards at Conspiracy Bar, Quezon City on December 1, 2014. This event recognizes the notable works of human rights defenders in utilizing the Internet in promoting and upholding human rights. “Internet Rights are #HumanRights” was the theme of the said event.

Some of the awards given were Awards for HR Campaign, Awards for HR Website, Awards for HR BlogSite, Awards for HR Event, Awards for HR Video, Awards for HR Photo, Awards HR for Off-The-Shelf, among others. Winners of the awards were selected through a month-long online voting which was done from October 25-November 25, 2014.

FMA also awarded the “Internet Freedom Award”, a first of its kind, to two distinguished personalities, Mr. Obet Bersola and Ms. Merl Opeña, for their valued contribution to the development of the Internet and Human Rights movement in the Philippines.

Lightning talks on Internet and Human Rights topics were also shared by speakers like Ms. Mae “Juana Change” Paner on the use of social media in campaigns, Ms. Naomi Fontanos of GANDA Filipinas on gender and human rights issues online, Ms. Nica Dumlao on the Take Back the Tech Campaign, and Mr. Al Alegre on privacy and surveillance in the Philippine context.

This event celebrates both the struggles and victories of human rights defenders and advocates in the continuous struggle for the promotion and defense of human rights both in the online and offline world.
