Sillimanians on Feminist Principles of the Internet

The Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) brought the conversation on feminist technology and internet rights to Silliman University in a workshop on the Feminist Principles of the Internet (FPI).

Held in partnership with Silliman University, the SU Student Government, and Illuminates of the Spectra, the workshop invited students to reflect on their experiences online and imagine what kind of internet they want - one that is safe, inclusive, accessible, empowering, and responsive to the rights of women, queer people, and other marginalized communities.

Facilitated by FMA Executive Director Liza Garcia and Advisory Board member Cheekay Cinco, the discussion introduced the 17 Feminist Principles of the Internet, which provide a framework for examining technology and the internet through a feminist lens. The principles cover key areas including access, movements, economy, expression, and embodiment, addressing issues such as digital inequality, internet governance, privacy, consent, anonymity, sexual expression, and online gender-based violence.

Rather than presenting the principles as a fixed set of solutions, the workshop encouraged participants to see them as an evolving framework for questioning how technology shapes rights, relationships, and power. Participants were also encouraged to think about how the internet can become a space for resistance, movement-building, expression, and collective action.

For FMA, imagining a feminist internet means imagining a digital environment where everyone can participate, express themselves, exercise their rights, and engage with technology free from discrimination and violence. The conversation remains relevant today as digital spaces continue to shape how people learn, organize, communicate, and participate in society.
