In June 2017, the National Broadband Plan (NBP) was launched after a series of consultations with various stakeholders. The NBP’s goal was to develop recommendations to address longstanding issues surrounding Philippine Internet. However, FMA is of the opinion that NBP should be gender-responsive, i.e., it should also consider the needs and aspirations of women and other marginalized sectors. In the Philippine Digital Gender Report Card that was launched in April 2017, FMA gave the Philippines an overall score of 5 out of 10. The score simply means that a glaring online digital divide still exists in the country despite or even because of existing government plans and policies.
In this regard, FMA, with the support of the World Wide Web Foundation, would like to invite you to a half-day Workshop on a Gender-Responsive National Broadband on November 7, 2017 (venue to be announced).
The workshop aims to increase women’s participation in the full infostructure spectrum and to foster gender-responsive planning processes and practice. The workshop also aims to tackle how the government can and must protect and enhance women’s rights online; educate women through digital skills training; deliver affordable and/or free access to an open web; ensure that relevant content for women is available and used; and define, set, and measure targets, particularly in the NBP.
